I paint from visual sources and look to them for suggestions of general composition, mood, rhythm, color, shapes, and textures. The source is a tether not an anchor - it allows me to explore without getting lost, it doesn't restrict me. Typically my sources are a bit ambiguous or at least unremarkable. I may just look out the window or wander into the backyard, or look at newspaper clippings, photos, or videos. I find the more mundane the scene, the more freedom I have to explore and interpret.
