For a decade, I painted landscapes in a realistic style. Since 2020, I have been exploring abstract landscapes as well as completely non-representational paintings. With this new body of work, I think about distilling the scene down to its key elements. With the non-representational paintings, I am often inspired by a color combination that I see in nature or daily life; I am so moved by its unique beauty that I want to create a painting to celebrate the color combination.
The non-representational paintings are about the colors and deciding how to divide the canvas into different shapes. They are also about all the details that emerge intentionally and serendipitously as I toil (in the best way possible) to get the colors exactly right. The layers and layers of paint and different colors create the most amazing little surprises to be discovered.
My paintings are acrylic. I most often paint on canvas, but I occasionally paint on wood panels.
