Alison O’Donoghue

My work and enthusiasm for painting is the expression of an ongoing love of shape, color and pattern, and story. Situations, conditions, joy and struggle in the world, small stories, reflections on things that make more sense to me expressed in images, not words. A desire for the new creation, combinations of imagery and color. Interactive characters, inventions, hybrid creatures, plants, familiar objects, food, etc. Interweaving, interdependent, colorful, organized chaos, densely organized pattern, fitting together like a puzzle. My work is acrylic on canvas or wood, on smooth surfaces, either smooth wood-usually birch, or canvas I made smooth using a process with polymer medium. Paint in layers, including transparent glazes, to build visual interest, purposefully – as well as encouraging the unexpected effects. I resonate with luminously colorful and also rich grey tones. I then varnish glossy with oil based varnish giving the painting glow and luminosity.
