Sara Swink

I make ceramic human and animal figures with a psychological stance. Introspective and ambiguous–they often have a humorous edge. I like to form fast in a gritty sculpture clay, incise into the clay, bisque fire, finish with oxide washes, underglazes and glazes, then fire to cone 5. My process includes collage and doodling on paper to invite imagery from the unconscious, which finds form in clay, and eventually, understanding through writing and reflection. Encoded shapes, surfaces, color and facial expression suggest the subtleties and contradictions of what lies within. The pieces have a handmade quality that reflects my desire to make them approachable.
