I find magic in the transformative quality of working with wax, pigment and fire. The elemental power of the material influences the creative process and lends the work a freedom of expression that is abundantly satisfying. In my most recent encaustic and mixed media work, I am concerned with different forms of energy, direction and movement in nature and the rare beauty found even in the starkest places.
Shannon Carlson is a happily encamped Oregon native who returned to Portland after living in New Mexico and Georgia. Her work is influenced by a sense of place-places she has been in life and in travels-places held close in memory and imagination.
