Travel and nature are integral parts of my studies in art (and in life), and have opened me up to a worldwide connection. In this body of work, I'm focusing on landscapes close to home, but they are also influenced by every place I've been and seen, and I try to convey this connection using universal expressive marks, unexpected color, shapes and natural patterns found in nature.

Each of the paintings in this collection start and usually finish in my studio, but the majority (about 80%) of the painting is done on site in nature (plein air). I use either a brightly gessoed surface, or an unfinished abstract painting as my starting point. I then outline a scene and cover the canvas quickly, but always allow areas of the bright underpainting to show through, so the overall result is an interaction of planned and spontaneous - just like life!

Immersing myself in nature makes me feel more connected to the image and helps me translate feelings, mood and emotion (and whatever hardship were had that day - extreme heat, cold, bug bites, etc) to reveal that which could never be seen or felt in a photograph.
