Carson Abbert
Growth. Love. Play. Those themes are at the heart of my work. I paint because it makes me feel alive. Painting for me is intuition and connection. When painting I feel tied to something greater than myself. It holds mystery for me. Ideas develop and parts of me show up in my pieces. Memories, culture, recent conversations. I never really know. It's like a good road trip though. It's not the destination. It's the quality of the ride, the adventure that matters. When marks and colors go on my canvases they start having conversations with each other. They ask for things. They try to upstage each other. It's my job to find a balance between these elements. A balance between shapes, colors, imagery and symbols is what I'm after. I am drawn to working abstractly because it is less like a narrative and more like poetry. Less about description than about feeling. It's the excitement of something new-a surprise-that motivates me. Seeing how one color or shape plays against another fuels my curiosity and inspires me to experiment and explore new processes and ideas. My hope is that my work will draw people in visually, emotionally and intellectually. I believe art can be a marker, a doorway, or a reminder for people to reflect on who they are and what they value. I value living a full life. One with a range of emotions and experiences. Painting represents that for me in all its loveliness and all its imperfections.
