Mary Jo Mann
Making art begins with a question, some hope, an idea. It's what some human's do, perhaps a way to process the experience of living in this world. I have come to realize that art has become an act of prayer and meditation for me. When I try to analyze why I have the need to make marks on paper or canvas, the only answer I come up with is it is a way to connect. Connect with other human beings, and to connect with a force that is greater than I am.
During my childhood I explored woods and fields near my home. Those days forged a deep connection with nature that drives my work. While in nature I am alert for a magic moment or gift to present itself. Sitting outdoors, feeling the breeze, hearing the rustle of the leaves, or just watching the light and shadow continuously shifting provides inspiration.
I interpret elements such as air, water, light, and wind, which make marks upon the earth. By using accidental marks such as drips, and splashes along with strong gestures I create pathways through my compositions. My creative process involves experimentation and exploration; allowing myself to play and discover.
I paint and work with ceramics. In both mediums, the physicality and engagement with my materials is an important aspect of my work. Over time, I have learned to let the paints or the clay lead me. I see this as a dialog, I react to what is happening with the piece, and that leads me through the work.
The activity of making art is a mysterious and fascinating aspect of being human. It is a way that we connect and communicate with one another. I aspire to make art that makes someone pause and reflect for a moment, to question, or to wonder. Human interdependence and connection to the natural world is the underlying subject of my work.
