Tatyana Ostapenko

I am a contemporary visual artist and muralist. My work focuses on transgenerational trauma and the search for belonging through the lens of my immigrant experience. My paintings are deeply rooted in the past and attempt to evoke moments that happen at the juncture of erased, imagined and personal histories. I use images from my native Ukraine and my new home, Oregon, to explore our collective memory with emphasis on empathy and hope in the face of adversity.
A distinguishing feature of my artwork is a combination of realistic rendering and bold abstract paint application. I started my artistic journey as a street photographer, and now I use photographic references and digital collage to generate painting compositions. I am always looking for new and exciting ways to apply paint and enjoy experimental techniques and tools and use squeegees, drywall knives, windshield wipers, rags, and fingertips to create my artwork.
For me, painting is an open-ended exploration of both subject matter and materials, and I allow the intuitive process and imperfect tools to lead me to new discoveries.
