Aaron McConnell is a freelance illustrator and painter with a home studio in SE Portland. His comic book and graphic novel work includes historical fiction, fantasy, sci-fi, and nonfiction including the NYTimes Bestseller "The Comic Book Story of Beer." He is an active member of the Hipbone Art Studio community and a frequent guest at the Boise Comic Art Festival where he has visited various elementary and high schools to discuss his career as a professional freelance artist.
"My painting process (examples of which are featured in my submissions to PDXOS) is a playground where I experiment with imagery and narrative in a way that is different from my freelance commercial work. Surrealism and mystery play key roles in these experiments. I often start with something personal like a portrait of a family member or friend, or objects and locations of personal interest. Images are reconfigured and altered from painting to painting to suggest transformation and generate meaning in context. The narratives are open to viewer interpretation with titles that invite decoding but are meant to evoke an emotional response over an exercise in puzzle solving. My influences from fantasy art and comic books are often on display and juxtaposed with my observational life drawing discipline." |
