Gary Houston is a graphic designer, illustrator, and print maker who lives in Portland, Oregon USA. He produces posters and prints under the moniker of Voodoo Catbox. Houston utilizes a variety of mediums and old school techniques - mainly scratchboard, inking, and hand-cut rubylith film - to achieve his images. His hands-on process continues as he screen prints his work in limited editions. Work is done for bands, management, tours, venues, and festivals. He also does CD/LP design, logos, and such. From the year 2001, Houston has had the honor of producing art and prints for the Waterfront Blues Festival in Portland.
"I screen print and am enamored with repetition of image. I very much like the idea of going from thought to something tangible that I can hold in my hands all within the walls of the studio. I do a lot of scratchboard illustration which is very organic and works very well with the screen printing process. I also still cut rubylith for color separations and sometimes create whole pieces from just the cut rubylith. All of this is done on a light table. I very much like the old school approach. I still draw with a pencil and work with an Xacto knife. Very hands-on." |
