Joanne Radmilovich Kollman is an Oregon-based artist known for her lyrical, energetic style. Her work emphasizes the expressive quality of oil paint, using bold brushwork and light to capture the spirit of figures, still life and landscapes. A signature member of the American Impressionist Society and a firm believer in the power of working from life, Joanne brings her award-winning expertise to the classroom, where she teaches Expressive Painting and Life Drawing and facilitates figure sessions at the Oregon Art Center. She has also been instrumental in bringing nationally acclaimed figure painting instructors to Portland, such as Max Ginsburg, Rob Liberace, Steven Assael, and Zhaoming Wu to Portland through her affiliation with OAC.
Joanne was born and raised in Portland, Oregon. Her father owned and operated the American Engraving Company, where the Northwest Film Studies Center now resides. She graduated from Grant High School, attended the Museum Art School formerly above the Portland Art Museum (now PNCA), Art Center College of Design, and later received a BFA in Painting from Marylhurst University. She worked as an animator & illustrator for local filmmaker Will Vinton and then worked as a freelance illustrator before becoming a full-time painter for the past 25 years. Her paintings are distributed nationally to galleries and have been purchased for private and public collections. She shows her work regularly at the Oregon Art Center and select local solo exhibitions. She is a yearly juried participant In the Pacific Northwest Plein Air Event and Exhibit at the Maryhill Museum.
"My work is primarily alla prima oil painting, defined as abstract realism. I am inspired by light and movement in my surroundings, painting people, places, and still life. I strive to evoke feeling and atmosphere with the organic quality of the paint and brushwork. I sometimes complete the pieces from photos, memory, and studies. I start by directly drawing with the paintbrush, often with a thinned mixture of burnt umber and ultramarine blue, massing in the size and placement. Every painting is like a new conversation, even when revisiting similar subjects. I often reinvent new ideas over old paintings, letting some of the old painting surface into the new. I like that my painting process is about relationships. Brushstrokes relate to previous marks, size decisions are relative to previous size and placement, and like life, the entire process can become unpredictable. Experimenting with color notes adds an extra layer of excitement. There is no better way to see and understand color and form than painting from life. It is this direct response to my surroundings that keeps me engaged with the painting process. I enjoy teaching art, inspiring others, and being involved in a diverse community. It's all about relationships." |
