Sienna Cenere is a self-taught artist with a Bachelor of Science in Biology. Her distinctive style, known as Numberism, involves meticulously hand-writing thousands of tiny numbers and equations to create meditative and educational artworks. Each piece is composed of scientific data relevant to the subject's form and function, bridging the gap between art, science, and public outreach.
Sienna has presented her work in multidisciplinary lectures across the Pacific Northwest and the UK, in collaboration with organizations such as NW Noggin, the Washington State Emergency Nurse Association, and Physiology News Magazine. She has exhibited at local galleries including Ford, Afru, Blind Insect, and Gallery 114 among others, and maintains an art studio in North Portland where she produces original work and fine art reproductions.
She is currently preparing to embark on a two year SciArt collaboration with research scientist Dr. Amanda Grunwald, which will take her from doing field work in the Andean rainforest, to historical analysis and specimen illustration at the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago. The project will culminate in a fine art exhibition and lecture series at the Climate Action Museum in Chicago. This exhibit will be presented to scientists, students, and the general public to engage and educate a broad audience about how climate change affects vulnerable species.
"My work is an intricate fusion of science and traditional fine art, meticulously hand drawn using a technique I call Numberism, where every mark is a number or equation. Instead of traditional shading, I create each illustration by repeatedly drawing data, such as a chemical formula for rose oxide (Câ‚â‚€Hâ‚₈O) or a numerical value such as the Hz frequency of a whale's song (52 Hz), until the composition takes form. This method is similar to pointillism and stippling, but instead of dots, I draw with numbers and equations that describe the subject itself. |
