Kristi Palmer studied painting and photography at Cornish College and the University of Washington in Seattle, earning her BFA in photography. For over a decade, she made and exhibited photographs in a series called urbansurfaces - work that shares a clear visual kinship with her paintings today.
After years working outside the arts, she returned to making art full time in 2021, following the loss of friends and family during Covid. She paints from her studio in Northwest Portland, Oregon.
"I’m drawn to the sense of connection that comes with paying attention to people. I watch for moments where a person reveals their humanity in a gesture or expression, responding to a universal language that goes beyond words. I’m equally captivated by everyday surfaces around us created by accident and time: rain mixing with dirt, abrasion wearing down metal and paint. These textures and patinas carry a sense of history and tactility. My work brings these two fascinations together. I paint in layers, inviting experimentation and unexpected marks while looking for ways to uncover what lies beneath and reveal the history each piece holds." |
