Miranda Trostle is the founder of Sego Lily Pottery and has been making pottery in SE Portland since 2012. Their upbringing in the high desert mountains of Utah strongly influenced their connection to place and landscapes, a theme that persists throughout their work. They earned a BA in Art (double focus in Ceramics and Photography) from Earlham College in 2010, at which time they moved to Portland and began working toward the foundation of Sego Lily Pottery, a ceramics studio focused on the union of aesthetics and functionality. After working primarily with electric oxidation firing for many years, Miranda has been exploring the rich world of atmospheric woodfiring since 2023, which has expanded their community as well as artistic practice.
"The conceptual basis for my work is inherent in the material - I am compelled to work with clay because the material speaks to the ancient origins of human civilization. The creation of vessels connects me to an ancestral dialogue of containment, of abundance, of thoughtful care toward future needs. In the midst of modern societal turmoil, ecological collapse, and an uncertain future, we can be recalled to our humanity by using objects made from the earth itself. By creating vessels that have the potential to last millennia, my work demands we create a future for human life on this planet. More immediately, my work elevates the daily rituals of life, creating touchstone objects that bring joy to those who incorporate it into their spaces. My creative practice itself is grounding, centering, elemental. The intention of my work is to spread that energy, to help remind others of our shared humanity." |
