Catherine Freshley

Catherine Freshley is a contemporary painter living and working in Portland, Oregon, her hometown. Her paintings are approachable and happy and she believes that art is for everyone. Freshley has been painting professionally since 2010. For ten years, she primarily painted colorful landscapes from her everyday life and travels. In 2020, she started exploring non-representational painting, still drawing much of her inspiration from nature.

Freshley graduated from Tulane University in New Orleans in 2009 with a degree in economics. She spent the next seven years working at an advertising agency as a digital marketing and brand marketing strategist. In 2016, Freshley left the ad agency and transitioned from an after-hours artist to full-time artist. In 2022, she opened her own studio-gallery in Portland.

Freshley's work can been found in healthcare and hospitality settings, the homes of thousands of collectors, the Oklahoma City Thunder's arena, at national retailers like Anthropologie and Neiman Marcus, and it has been used on multiple sets of Saturday Night Live, Law & Order SVU, and Elsbeth.

"My acrylic paintings are primarily about color combinations and the details of textures and edges that emerge intentionally and serendipitously as I toil (in the best way possible) to get the colors exactly right. From 2010 to 2020, I almost exclusively painted detailed landscapes from photos I took. Since 2020, I have expanded my practice to include three, additional styles - all still driven by my love of color and largely inspired by nature. I am now also painting abstract landscapes, aerial scenes inspired by photos taken from a small plane, and non-representational color field paintings."
