Craig Conahan is originally from California where he began his art studies then moved to Indiana and Colorado to complete his Printmaking degrees. He came to Portland in 1995 to be near family and pursue a design career. He lives and works in North Portland.
"I make a lot of different kinds of work. It's never been important what I do but rather that the work gets done. This philosophy frees me from the discipline of being an expert and allows me to play with what vies for my attention.
Consequently, my work varies from hand-printed wood to handwoven rugs, to tufted icons. My subject matter wanders too. Ideas about memory, place and facility are recurring themes. Recreating details matters less to me than capturing gestures. I try to use what I have and to not be hindered by need. Learning new skills and letting process initiate an outcome keeps me off balance and forever challenged.
The Portland Tree Prints are an ongoing project to document Portland's five quadrants. These specimens were felled due to disease, expansion and/or other landscaping decisions. The rings are more than just records of age. They conjure up stories about piano lessons or the mess of pollen, worms and needles. Every print is a portrait." |
