Aremy Stewart

Aremy Stewart

Aremy Stewart synthesizes personal narrative, mythology, human potential, mindset and philosophy into paintings that merge abstraction and figuration. Using acrylics & gouache on canvas and wood, Stewart builds little worlds of layered color.
Aremy's practice is guided by studies in human psychology and brain science, the parameters of the physical body and the rhythms of nature. Art is a spiritual act for Stewart, accessed through the flow state brought on by the deep focus of creating work. By ceding control to the process, she creates without a premeditated goal, tapping into intuition and muscle memory.
Stewart's exhibition history & collaborations include CHEFAS PROJECTS, Zinc Contemporary Gallery, Fine Art Fruit, Hacker Architects, River General, Cloudforest, Brookland Apartments, Cafe Olli, Stumptown, m.o.o.n.i. gallery Mexico City, Never Coffee, The Southside Gallery, BICHO CDMX, The Stay Home Gallery, Casa Lù Gallery CDMX, Woonwinkle, Mantel PDX, An An Brunch Kenton, Tabor Design Group, Proposals For All, Layday Lisbon, Portland Tastemakers Market, Vein Of Gold, ROOT, Valkyr, Arteria Art Boutique Barcelona, Potted In Portland, and Juxtapose Magazine. Aremy has shown internationally in Japan, Iceland, Italy, Mexico, the Netherlands, Portugal, and her work is held in private collections around the world.

"My paintings are successful when they feel "true", not overworked or mannered. Sprezzatura, the Italian word for making something difficult seem easy or casual, has become central to my practice. My work is about this tension between effort and the effortless.
Since moving to the Pacific Northwest I've been deeply inspired by the natural landscape, especially the ocean. I work with acrylic washes on canvas and wood. Discovery, exploration, and process are my guiding words. I don't sketch things beforehand but prefer to build up layer upon layer until the piece has a balance and outcome all its own."
