"I have been painting on location with oils 'en Plein Air' since 2010. My body of work has been created in the spectacular settings and natural beauty of the PNW. I have participated in Plein Air Festivals throughout the PNW, California, New Mexico & Colorado over several decades now. Still, there is nothing quite like our Oregon coastline, the Columbia Gorge, the outstanding famous gardens in Portland and the surrounding region: Hood River, The Willamette Valley, Forest Park. I also practice Sumi-e ink painting - a calligraphic form found in most Asian cultures. This study informs my work as an oil painter. Its simplicity, intentional mark-making, commitment of singular lines, shapes, values is a continual source of study, challenge and information. I have personally learned much from this ancient form and continue to practice this today in addition to my continued love of painting on location. Lyrical, organic lines, shapes and forms have always fascinated me. There are no straight lines in nature. Curvilinear lines, spirals, layers of textures remind me of the complexity of plant structures and, at the same time, the simplicity of their form." |
