Monika Vitek is a multimedia artist based in Portland, Oregon. Born and raised in the Czech Republic, she grew up surrounded by art from many eras-visible in architecture, public spaces, and daily life. For the past 25 years, the landscapes and vast horizons of the Pacific Northwest have become an equally strong influence on her work.
Working in both painting and ceramics, Vitek explores the relationship between surface and depth, memory and place. Her paintings combine natural pigments, ink, acrylic, and black sand collected from the Oregon Coast. These materials introduce texture and subtle movement, revealing a dialogue between what lies beneath and what emerges above. Series including Uncommon Landscapes, Out There, and Sands of Stillness reflect her personal interpretations of life, environment, and quiet connection.
In her ceramic practice, which began in 2009, Vitek works primarily with porcelain using wheel-throwing and handbuilding techniques. Through Mishima and sgraffito processes, she explores repetition, line, and transition-where one pattern gradually transforms into another. Locally gathered ilmenite, iron rich sand is integrated into clay bodies, slip, inlay, and glaze, allowing natural mineral variation to surface through the firing process. Each piece carries a physical trace of the landscape that informs her work.
Her work has been exhibited throughout Oregon, Washington, Colorado, and Tennessee, and is included in regional exhibitions such as Portland Open Studios, Salem Art Fair, and Red Sky Gallery in Seattle.
"My work explores the quiet relationship between land, memory, and the spaces we often overlook-the ground that roots us and the sky that invites reflection. I am interested in how what lies beneath the surface shapes what we see above it. Material is central to my process. In painting, I work with watercolor, natural pigments, ink, acrylic, and iron-rich sand. The sand introduces weight and texture, creating tension between fluid washes and grounded material. I build surfaces slowly, allowing layers to dry and settle before responding to what emerges. The process is intuitive and reflective rather than predetermined. In ceramics, I work primarily with porcelain using wheel-throwing and handbuilding techniques. Through Mishima and sgraffito processes, I explore repetition and subtle shifts in line, where one design transitions into another. Iron-rich sand is integrated into clay, slip, inlay, or glaze, allowing the material to move and reveal itself over time. I am drawn to how porcelain can both conceal and expose these natural elements. |
