Soham Darwish is a Detroit born, Portland based painter whose work consists mainly of figure paintings though she also paints still lifes. Darwish was exposed to an array of childhood experiences and wonderful teachers, all contributing to her desire to draw and "do art". The Detroit Institute of Art Museum played an important role in exposing her to great art and artists.
Darwish received a BFA from Wayne State University in Detroit, where she took as many life drawing and paintings classes as she could. After choosing not to continue an MFA degree, she became a teacher in Portland Public Schools where she included her art training in whichever subject she was teaching. After retiring Soham resumed doing art again.
Darwish considers her art experiences as her true education. It has sharpened her eye and shaped her views in life.
"I am primarily a figure painter, though, I also paint still lifes. I paint subjects with the intent of revealing something unique and special about their circumstances. I don't necessarily paint to flatter. As a still life painter, I like to use objects that I have collected over time and that hold a special interest to me. |
