Shawn Lawson Freeman

Being a lover of art at a very young age and taking art classes in high school, Shawn created several paintings, all of which were eventually given to his friends and family. But having no real guidance with his art, he ended up pursuing the art of music.

Now, almost 40 years later and after buying a house in 2024 which provided the time and space to experiment and create again, he found renewed joy and enthusiasm to explore many different types of art making and painting techniques, finally landing him on what felt the most authentic, large scale, action based, abstract paintings.

The four paintings submitted were all created in the summer of 2025 from May to August and custom frames were made by Shawn after all four were completed.

"My work is created using a variety of acrylic inks and high flow acrylic on canvas or Yupo. The paints are mixed with water and a medium, then poured on to the substrate, with many layers applied. The paintings are attached to a large platform enabling them to be shimmed, which makes the paint flow in the desired direction, forming the various shapes, textures and depth. I also use a small blower sometimes to move the paint around on the canvas.

The outcome is always a surprise because as much as I try to guide the paint, it tends to want to do its own thing. I feel the paint defines itself, I'm just an observer watching it quietly move as it wants to move."
