Autumn Higgins

Autumn Higgins

Autumn Higgins was born into a family of artists, and was surrounded by creative influence from an early age. Her mother is a painter, and her grandparents, Ray and Jere Grimm, worked in ceramics for more than fifty years. Growing up in this environment fostered a deep appreciation of art objects in everyday life. This made a career in the arts feel both natural and inevitable.

Her focused study of ceramics began at Southern Oregon University. She continued her education as a post-baccalaureate student at the University of Florida. She then entered the Master of Fine Arts program at Louisiana State University and completed the degree in 2014.

In 2015, Autumn moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota, to participate in the artist-in-residence program at Northern Clay Center. During this time, she also developed a strong commitment to teaching, working across a range of settings including community education programs, university-level courses, and as the art teacher at a small K-8 school from 2015 to 2022. Throughout these years, she maintained an active studio practice and a consistent exhibition schedule.

In the fall of 2022, she returned to Oregon and settled in Portland. Since then, she has welcomed her second child, established a home studio, and continued exhibiting locally at craft events such as Art in the Pearl and Ceramic Showcase, while also showing her work in galleries across the country.

"I create wheel-thrown and hand-built porcelain objects for both functional and decorative use in the home.

My work features lively imagery of plants, animals, and the surrounding landscape. Through everyday use, viewers come into close contact with the illustrated surfaces, creating opportunities to explore the relationship between form, surface, and drawing.

While rooted in functional pottery, my work moves beyond strict utility and function as decorative art as well. By combining drawing with functional form, I aim to create objects that bring moments of curiosity, storytelling, and connection to the natural environment into daily life."
