Sam Schrott

Sam Schrott is a ceramic artist born and raised in Portland, Oregon. Schrott attended Southern Oregon University from 2016 to 2018, where he began his studies in ceramics before transferring to the University of Oregon. In 2020, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree with a focus in ceramics. During this time, Schrott worked for a variety of ceramic artists and served as a studio technician at his universities.

Following graduation, Schrott took a production pottery position at Wolf Ceramics, where he spent the next two years making work. During this period, he also moved into his first private studio at Kerby Alley Studios. After a flood at the end of 2022 forced him to leave Kerby Alley, Schrott sought a new place to continue his practice, which led to the founding of Clay St. Studios, a multidisciplinary art studio and gallery shared with musician Ann Annie.

Today, Schrott continues to make work while also teaching and hosting live music and art shows at his studio. His home in the Pacific Northwest provides a limitless source of inspiration through its natural materiality and beauty.

"Nature has always felt impossible to fully harness or replicate, especially the way its beauty shapes our emotions. This fascination inspires my making process. Rather than replicating what I see, I use nature as a point of intrigue-a starting place for creation. Working this way allows for discovery, letting form and surface emerge through the act of making and leaving room for influential moments to guide the work.

My process begins with materials. I use locally sourced or reclaimed clays and apply techniques, forms, and finishes that reflect their characteristics and origins. I believe the objects we interact with affect our state of mind, and those subtle, constant interactions continue to fascinate me. My work explores the qualities and limitations of ceramic materials, techniques, firing methods, and sculptural form, seeking a sense of place and remembrance aligned with the experience of nature."
