Karl Kaiser

Karl Kaiser lives and works in Portland, OR. He works primarily in encaustic, drawn to the medium for its physical depth and quiet complexity. Karl's work is held in private collections worldwide. His work has been featured in numerous publications, including 50 States/200 Artists (Museum of Encaustic Art, 2019), Encaustic Arts (Spring 2016), Experience Painting (Davis Publications, 2015), and Poppycock Magazine.

"My work is primarily in encaustic. I am drawn to the medium for its physical depth and quiet complexity. Pigment suspended in molten wax allows for a slow, deliberate way of working - one that embraces layering, revision, and touch. Through scraping, impression, heat, and smoothing, I build surfaces that hold light rather than simply reflect it, resulting in works that feel both tactile and luminous.

Observation is central to my practice. Trees, shifting textures, reflections, petals, and fleeting atmospheric moments -sunrise, dusk, the trace of moisture on a surface - become starting points. My daily walks are where ideas first take shape, long before they enter the studio.

This sensibility is especially present in my Journey and Stratum series. Here, I explore the movement of light and the passage of time, creating landscapes that resist specificity. The works suggest a place without naming it - inviting memory, mood, and personal association. Subtle shifts in tone and surface create varying emotional registers, allowing each piece to carry its own quiet vitality."
